FIFO Mining Charter Flights
Outback Airlines acts as Co-ordinator and central reservations for several mining companies in the Tennant Creek Region that charter air craft for Fly-in Fly-out crew changeovers, management and suppliers.
By sharing the cost of these charter flights, the mining companies benefit from having three services a week on a shared basis instead of having to charter a seperate aircraft on an 'adhoc' basis everytime they need to fly just one or two passengers.
These charter flights between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek are designed to connect with interstate flights to Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Perth and Sydney enabling convenient Fly-in Fly-out connections to anywhere in Australia.
The success of the Tennant Creek model is being extended to other mining regions such as Mt Isa where it is not possible to catch a direct RPT airline flight to Alice Springs or Darwin and instead mining company personnel have to fly east all the way to Brisbane to get to Adelaide or Perth.
Optional intermediate stops at Ali Curung (Weds) and Lake Nash (1 flt/wk) also benefit communities en route.
Most of the mining charter flights are operated by Directair.
